Last week, we learned from 2 Thessalonians 3 that true faith works while we wait—faith that is disciplined, steady, and faithful in daily life.
This week, we begin a new journey into 1 Corinthians, where the focus shifts from perseverance in waiting… to transformation in living.
The church in Corinth was gifted—but divided. Passionate—but immature. And into that reality, the Apostle Paul speaks a message we still desperately need today.
Setting the Stage: A Church in Trouble
Corinth was a thriving, diverse, and worldly city—and the church reflected that environment.
Reports had reached Paul that believers were arguing, forming factions, and elevating human leaders over Christ.
Before correcting their behavior, Paul reminds them of their identity:
“Sanctified in Christ Jesus… called to be saints.”
They were already set apart—but not yet living like it.
That tension still defines us today.
1 Corinthians 1: The Cross Over Division
Paul begins with a plea:
“That there be no divisions among you… but that you be perfectly united.”
The Problem: Divided Loyalties
Some followed Paul. Others followed Apollos. Others claimed different leaders.
Sound familiar?
When Christ is not the center, something else always takes His place.
The Solution: The Cross of Christ
Paul brings them back to one unifying truth:
“The message of the cross… is the power of God.”
To the world, the cross looks weak, foolish, even offensive.
But to those being saved—it is everything.
God deliberately overturns human expectations:
The weak shame the strong
The foolish shame the wise
The lowly are lifted up
Why?
So that “no one may boast before Him.”
Key Truth
Unity comes not from agreement on personalities—but from surrender to the cross.
1 Corinthians 2: The Spirit Over Human Wisdom
If chapter 1 confronts division, chapter 2 confronts pride.
The Corinthians loved eloquence, philosophy, and intellectual status. Paul reminds them:
“I resolved to know nothing… except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
Not Persuasive Words—but Power
Paul did not rely on:
Clever arguments
Impressive speech
Human wisdom
Instead, he preached in weakness—so their faith would rest on God’s power, not man’s ability.
The Deep Things of God
Here is the turning point:
“The things of God… are revealed through the Spirit.”
Spiritual truth is not merely learned—it is revealed.
The natural mind cannot grasp it
The Spirit must open the heart
Believers are given “the mind of Christ”
This is why the gospel confuses some—and transforms others.
Because it is spiritually discerned.
Bringing It Together
Chapters 1 and 2 give us two anchors:
1. The Cross Grounds Us
It humbles our prideIt removes our boastingIt unites us in Christ
2. The Spirit Guides Us
He reveals truthHe shapes understandingHe gives us the mind of Christ
Application for Us Today
Just like Corinth, we live in a culture that:
Values image over substance
Celebrates intellect over humility
Divides over personalities and opinions
But the call remains the same:
Return to the cross. Walk in the Spirit. Live as one body in Christ.
Reflection Questions
Where do you see division creeping into your thinking or relationships?
Are you relying more on human understanding—or the Spirit’s guidance?
What does it mean for you personally to live “Christ crucified” this week?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, bring us back to the simplicity and power of Your cross. Strip away our pride, our divisions, and our desire to boast in anything but You. Teach us not to rely on our own understanding, but to walk daily in Your Spirit.
Give us the mind of Christ—humble, obedient, and full of truth.Unite us as Your people, that the world may see Your power at work in us.In Your name we pray, Amen.

In the cross of Christ I glory,
Towering o’er the wrecks of time;
All the light of sacred story
Gathers round its head sublime.
When the woes of life o’ertake me,
Hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
Never shall the cross forsake me,
Lo! it glows with peace and joy.
When the sun of bliss is beaming
Light and love upon my way,
From the cross the radiance streaming
Adds more luster to the day.
Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
By the cross are sanctified;
Peace is there that knows no measure,
Joys that through all time abide.
In the cross of Christ I glory,
Towering o’er the wrecks of time;
All the light of sacred story
Gathers round its head sublime.
Words: John Bowring, Hymns by John Bow¬ring, 1825.
There is a sto¬ry (prob¬ab¬ly apo¬cryph¬al) about the in¬spir¬a¬tion for these words. The tra¬di¬tion is that Bow¬ring was sail¬ing past the coast of Ma¬cao, Chi¬na. On the shore were the re¬mains of an old, fire gut¬ted church. Above the ru¬ins, he saw the church’s cross still stand¬ing. The ti¬tle of this hymn was carved on Bow-ring’s tomb¬stone.
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Galatians 6:14
