The Journey Turns: Not Just Hard—But Deceptive Danger
Christian has passed through the Valley. He has fought. He has endured. He has learned humility through suffering.
But now the road changes.
The danger ahead is no longer only open attack—it is subtle deception.
The path is still narrow. But now it is also confusing.
And for the first time, other travelers begin to matter deeply.
New Companions Appear
As Christian presses forward, he no longer walks alone.
Soon, he will meet Faithful, a fellow pilgrim who has also fled the City of Destruction. Their conversation will bring:
Shared testimony
Mutual strengthening
Honest reflection about past failures
Later still, another companion will arise—Hopeful—born out of suffering and witness.
This marks a turning point:
The Christian life was never meant to be walked alone.
“Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.” Ecclesiastes 4:9–10
But companionship brings both help and risk.
Not every voice on the road is a true guide.
Discernment Becomes Essential
Up to this point, most dangers have been obvious:
The Slough of Despond
The roaring of lions
The direct assault of Apollyon
But what comes next is more dangerous because it is less obvious.
Christian will soon encounter people who:
Speak well
Sound religious
Appear friendly
Yet are spiritually dangerous.
Some will:
Distract from the narrow way
Twist truth just enough to confuse
Offer easier paths that lead away from the King
This is the beginning of a deeper lesson:
Not all who speak of truth walk in truth.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing…”Matthew 7:15
The Battle Moves Inward
In the Valley, Christian fought a visible enemy and stood his ground, refusing to turn back even when nearly defeated.
.
Now, the struggle becomes more internal:
Whom do I trust?
What voice do I follow?
Is this path truly the King’s way?
The battlefield shifts:
From external opposition to internal discernment
And this is often the harder fight.
A Formed Man Walks Forward
Christian is no longer the man who fled in fear.
He is:
Wounded—but healed
Tested—but standing
Humbled—but stronger
The Valley of Humiliation has done its work.
What once nearly destroyed him has now formed him.
And that formation is necessary—because deception cannot be resisted by strength alone.
It requires:
Truth rooted deeply
A heart anchored in the King
A willingness to test every voice
Where the Road Leads Next
The journey is about to widen—not in ease, but in complexity.
Ahead lies:
Fellowship that strengthens
Voices that mislead
Trials that reveal the heart
And soon, Christian will enter one of the most revealing places of all:
A place where faith is tested not by monsters…
…but by a world that looks almost right.
Closing Reflection
The Christian life begins with escape. It is shaped through struggle. But it is matured through discernment.
Not every danger roars.
Some whisper.
And only those who learn to discern will continue on the narrow way.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,You have brought us through valleys and battles, but now teach us to walk wisely.
Give us discernment to recognize truth from error, courage to reject what is false, and humility to walk with those who truly follow You.
Guard our hearts from deception, and keep our eyes fixed on Christ, the true and faithful guide.
We ask in Your Name. Amen.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
1. O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There's light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free.
o Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
2. Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
O'er us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conqu'rors we are!
3. His Word shall not fail you, He promised;
Believe Him and all will be well;
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!
Words and music by Helen Howarth Lemmel, 1863-1961
And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. Matthew 20:32-34
