The Interpreter had refreshed Christiana, Mercy, and the boys. Before they continued their journey, another visitor arrived. Then said the Interpreter, "This is Great-heart, your guide and conductor. He will faithfully accompany you until you shall come to the desired haven." Christiana welcomed him gladly. "Sir," she said, "our Lord has dealt kindly with us already, and now He has added this mercy also."

The pilgrims had now left the House of the Interpreter. Christiana walked with her four sons, and Mercy kept close beside them. They had learned much within those walls, but the King's Highway still stretched before them, and none of them knew what the next day's journey would bring.

The Interpreter led Christiana and her companions into another room. There stood a sheep, quiet and still, while a butcher prepared to kill it. The travelers watched in silence. At last Christiana spoke. "What means this sight, Sir?" The Interpreter answered, "Do you see how quietly the sheep stands? It neither struggles nor complains, though it knows what is before it. So should the children of God learn patience when the Lord calls them to suffer."

After showing Christiana and Mercy the man who spent his life looking downward with a muck-rake instead of upward toward a heavenly crown, the Interpreter led them into another room. At first glance, it seemed empty. Then their eyes found something that made them recoil. High upon the wall clung a large spider. The Interpreter quietly asked, "Is there but one spider in the room?"
