Scripture Focus
Matthew 4:21–22 Mark 1:19–20
Last time, we saw Joseph—the father who obeyed without understanding.
This week, we meet Zebedee—the father who let them go.
Introduction: A Quiet Father in the Background
Some fathers shape history with words. Others shape it with decisions.
Zebedee never preaches. He never advises. He never steps into the spotlight.
And yet, in one brief moment, he reveals something profound about fatherhood:
He lets his sons walk away.
The Moment That Changed Everything
The scene is simple:
A boat.Nets being mended. A family business in motion.
Then Jesus Christ passes by and calls:
“Follow me.”
And immediately, James, son of Zebedee, and John the Apostle leave:
Their nets
Their livelihood
Their future inheritance
Their father
“And they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.”
No hesitation. No negotiation.
And—most striking of all—no recorded objection from their father.
What Zebedee Gave Up
This was not a small sacrifice.
Zebedee was not a poor man scraping by. Scripture hints that he ran a successful fishing business with hired men.
.
That means:
James and John were not just sons
They were partners
They were the future of the family enterprise
When they left, Zebedee didn’t just lose companionship—he lost security, succession, and stability.
And yet… he lets them go.
The Father Who Did Not Cling
There is a kind of love that holds tightly.
And there is a deeper love that releases.
Zebedee could have:
Argued
Resisted
Demanded they stay
Reminded them of duty
Instead, Scripture gives us silence.
In a culture where sons were expected to carry on the family name and trade, this quiet surrender is remarkable.
Zebedee entrusts his sons to a calling he does not control.
The Sons of Thunder
These were not mild, easy sons.
Jesus would later call them “Boanerges”—“Sons of Thunder.”
Passionate
Intense
Sometimes impulsive
They would:
Seek positions of honor
Suggest calling down fire from heaven
Walk closely with Jesus in His most intimate moments
And one day:
James would become the first apostolic martyr
John would endure exile and write of eternal glory
Zebedee releases them… into both greatness and suffering.
The Hidden Faith of a Father
Zebedee never appears again in the Gospel story in any active role.
But his influence is everywhere:
In the courage of James
In the devotion of John
In their willingness to leave everything
Because before they followed Christ…
They learned something at home:
When God calls, you go.
A Word to Fathers Today
Zebedee reminds us:
You cannot always keep your sons. But you can prepare them to follow God.
Faithful fatherhood is not:
Controlling outcomes
Securing comfort
Preserving plans
It is:
Recognizing God’s call
Trusting beyond your understanding
Letting go when the time comes
Sometimes the greatest act of love is not building their future…
…but releasing them into God’s.
Closing Reflection
Zebedee stayed in the boat.
His sons stepped into history.
And heaven remembers not what he held…
but what he was willing to surrender.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,, give us the faith of Zebedee—to trust You with what we love most.
Teach us to raise our children not for ourselves, but for Your purposes.
And when the moment comes to let go, give us quiet hearts, steady hands, and unwavering trust in Your call.
Amen.

I SURRENDER ALL
All to Jesus, I surrender;
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
Refrain
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessèd Savior,
I surrender all.
All to Jesus I surrender;
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken;
Take me, Jesus, take me now.
Refrain
All to Jesus, I surrender;
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.
Refrain
All to Jesus, I surrender;
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power;
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
Refrain
All to Jesus I surrender;
Now I feel the sacred flame.
O the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!
Refrain
Jud¬son W. Van De¬Vent¬er, 1896:
