Fathers and Adult Sons: Joseph and Jesus: the Father Who Obeyed Without Understanding

After the long and often troubled line of fathers and sons in the Old Testament, something quiet—and astonishing—happens when we turn to the New.

There is no rivalry here. No betrayal. No tragic inheritance of sin from one generation to the next.

Instead, we meet a man who never speaks a single recorded word in Scripture…and yet may be one of the most faithful fathers in all the Bible.

We meet Joseph.

A Different Kind of Father

Joseph is not the biological father of Jesus. He enters the story already at a disadvantage—asked to believe what no man had ever been asked to believe.

“That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20)

And yet, he stays.

He does not demand explanation. He does not assert authority. He does not try to control the situation.

He obeys.

Fatherhood as Obedience

In the Old Testament, we saw fathers trying to shape sons—sometimes well, often poorly.

But Joseph is different.

He does not shape Jesus. He receives Him.

He names Him (Matthew 1:25). He protects Him (Matthew 2:13–14). He provides for Him in obscurity and exile.

Joseph’s fatherhood is not about forming the Son—it is about faithfully carrying out the will of God for the Son.

And he does this without recognition, without control, and without full understanding.

Lord Jesus, Thank you for the man who served as Your earthly father. Help me learn from his example, to walk in obedience to Your will raising my children to serve you in practical ways. Amen

The Silent Strength of Joseph

Joseph never speaks in the Gospel accounts.

But his actions speak clearly:

  • When told to take Mary as his wife, he does

  • When warned to flee to Egypt, he goes immediately

  • When told to return, he returns

  • When warned again, he adjusts course

There is no hesitation recorded. No argument. No visible struggle.

Just obedience.

In a world that often measures fatherhood by influence, authority, or legacy, Joseph shows us something deeper:

Faithfulness is not always loud.Sometimes it is simply the willingness to do what God asks—again and again.

Raising the Son Who Surpasses You

Every father in the Old Testament faced this question in some form:

What happens when the son goes his own way?

With Joseph, the question is transformed:

What happens when the Son belongs ultimately to God?

At age twelve, Jesus remains behind in the temple, saying:

“Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49)

Even here, Joseph is present—but gently displaced.

He is a true father, but not the ultimate Father.

And he accepts this.

The Quiet Redemption of Fatherhood

Where so many fathers before him struggled, failed, or lost their sons, Joseph models a different path:

  • He does not cling

  • He does not control

  • He does not compete

He entrusts the Son to the will of God.

And in doing so, he becomes part of the greatest story ever told.

Where We See Jesus

Joseph’s life points beyond itself.

Because the obedience Joseph shows in raising the child will one day be perfectly fulfilled by the Son he raises.

  • Joseph obeys without full understanding

  • Jesus obeys fully—even unto death

  • Joseph accepts the will of God in quiet faith

  • Jesus embraces it in the garden: “Not my will, but Yours be done”

The father models obedience. The Son fulfills it completely.

Final Reflection

The Old Testament showed us how fragile fatherhood can be. Joseph shows us how strong it can become when it is surrendered to God.

He does not need to be the center of the story. He only needs to be faithful in the part he has been given.

And that is enough.

The Carpenter’s Song

With chisel and wood, he carved a life,

Amidst divine mystery, turmoil, and strife.

St Joseph, the carpenter, your song unsung,

Resounds in the heavens, in every tongue.

In each careful cut, in every grain,

Your love for the Savior, forever ingrained.

St Joseph, the carpenter, in wood and stone,

Your legacy lives, never alone.
