Last week in Zephaniah, we heard the thunder:

God’s silence ends. Judgment comes. Hope remains.

Now we turn the page.

The storm has passed.

The people are back.

And what they do next… matters.

The Setting: Back Home, But Not Fully Back

The exile is over.

A remnant has returned to Jerusalem. The altar is rebuilt. The foundation of the temple is laid.

But then…

Life happens.

Houses need building. Fields need tending. Families need feeding.

And slowly—quietly—the work of God is set aside.

The temple sits unfinished for years.

Not abandoned.

Just… delayed.

God Speaks Again — But Differently

Through the prophet Haggai, God does not roar like in Zephaniah.

He asks a question:

“Consider your ways.”

You are busy…But not satisfied.

You earn…But it slips through your fingers.

You build your house…While Mine lies in ruins.

This is not just rebuke—it is diagnosis.

They have returned geographically…

But not spiritually.

The Core Issue: Misplaced Priorities

The people were not rebellious.

They were distracted.

Comfort came first.God came second.

And that changed everything.

Haggai reveals a hard truth:

When God is not first, nothing else works the way it should.

A Rare Moment in Scripture

Something remarkable happens.

The people listen.

They don’t argue.They don’t delay.

They obey.

“And the Lord stirred up their spirit…”

They begin to build again.

This is one of the few places in Scripture where a prophetic warning leads to immediate, collective obedience.

Encouragement for the Discouraged

But obedience doesn’t erase discouragement.

The new temple seems… small.

Nothing like the glory of the past.

And into that disappointment, God speaks again:

“I am with you.”

And more:

“The latter glory… shall be greater than the former.”

God is not just rebuilding a structure.

He is restoring His presence.

What Haggai Teaches Us

Haggai is short—just two chapters.

But it cuts deep.

1. “Consider your ways.”We must stop and examine what we are building.

2. God’s work cannot be secondary. Delayed obedience is still disobedience.

3. God meets us when we return.“I am with you” comes after they begin again.

4. Small beginnings still matter. God sees beyond what we see.

Where This Leads

Zephaniah warned:

God will act.

Haggai shows:

God has acted—now you must respond.

The journey continues:

  • From warning → to rebuilding

  • From judgment → to obedience

  • From ruins → to renewal

Next comes Zechariah—

Where God lifts their eyes even higher…

From a rebuilt temple…to a coming King.

Closing Reflection

Take a moment.

Not to rush ahead.

But to hear Haggai’s words personally:

“Consider your ways.”

What are you building?

And is God at the center of it?

GIVE OF YOUR BEST TO THE MASTER

Give of your best to the Master;

Give of the strength of your youth.

Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor

Into the battle for truth.

Jesus has set the example,

Dauntless was He, young and brave.

Give Him your loyal devotion;

Give Him the best that you have.

Give of your best to the Master;

Give of the strength of your youth.

Clad in salvation’s full armor,

Join in the battle for truth.

Give of your best to the Master;

Give Him first place in your heart.

Give Him first place in your service;

Consecrate every part.

Give, and to you will be given;

God His beloved Son gave.

Gratefully seeking to serve Him,

Give Him the best that you have.

Give of your best to the Master;

Naught else is worthy His love.

He gave Himself for your ransom,

Gave up His glory above.

Laid down His life without murmur,

You from sin’s ruin to save.

Give Him your heart’s adoration;

Give Him the best that you have.

Howard B. Grose, 1902

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Col 3:23
