Sunday Morning Bible Study: Galatians 5 — Stand Fast in Liberty

Freedom was purchased here.
Communion Elements on a Wooden Table

Freedom was purchased here.

Last week we walked through Galatians 3 and 4, where Paul reminded us that we are not saved by the law but by promise—children of Abraham through faith, adopted sons and daughters who cry, “Abba, Father.”

Tomorrow we move into Galatians 5, where that theology becomes intensely practical.

Bring your Bibles. We will read the chapter together carefully.

1. Stand Fast in Freedom

Paul opens with a trumpet call:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Galatians 5:1

This is not political liberty. It is not personal autonomy. It is freedom from the law as a means of salvation. Freedom from striving to earn what Christ has already accomplished.

The danger in Galatia was clear: some were being persuaded that faith in Christ needed supplementation—circumcision, ritual obedience, boundary markers of the old covenant.

Paul speaks plainly: to add law-keeping as a condition of justification is to fall from grace, not into sin, but into legalism.

Freedom in Christ is not earned. It is received. And it must be guarded.

2. Liberty Is Not License

But Paul immediately corrects another danger. Christian liberty is not self-indulgence.

“Only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” Galatians 5:13

Freedom in Christ does not produce selfishness; it produces service.

The entire law, Paul says, is fulfilled in one word: love your neighbor as yourself.

This is the balance of the Christian life:

  • Not law as bondage

  • Not freedom as chaos

  • But love as fulfillment

3. The Works of the Flesh

Paul then speaks with sobering clarity.

If we live according to the flesh, certain things will follow: immorality, jealousy, anger, division, envy, drunkenness, and more. These are not abstract categories; they are visible patterns of life.

He does not soften the warning. A life ruled by such things contradicts the kingdom of God.

This is not meant to produce despair—but honesty.

The flesh is real. It must not be ignored.

4. The Fruit of the Spirit

In contrast, Paul describes the life shaped by the Spirit:

Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Galatians 5:22-23

Notice: not “fruits,” but fruit. A unified character formed by the Spirit of God within us.

This is not self-manufactured morality.

Fruit grows because life is present. Where the Spirit reigns, transformation follows.

And then the quiet but powerful statement:

“Against such there is no law.”

No law is needed where love governs the heart.

5. Walking in the Spirit

Paul concludes with a call:

  • Crucify the flesh.

  • Walk in the Spirit.

  • Do not provoke or envy one another.

This is daily dependence. Step by step. Yieldedness rather than striving. Faith expressing itself through love.

Transition to the Lord’s Supper

Having heard Paul call us to stand firm in grace and to walk in the Spirit, we now come to the Lord’s Table, where our freedom was purchased and our new life secured by Christ Himself.

The Lord’s Supper

As we come to the Table, we remember that our liberty cost the body and blood of our Savior.

We do not stand here because we have conquered the flesh or perfected the fruit.

We stand here because Christ has done for us what we could never do for ourselves.

The bread reminds us that His body was given.

The cup reminds us that His blood was shed.

Here we confess where we have walked in the flesh.

Here we give thanks for the Spirit who bears fruit within us.

Here we renew our trust—not in law, not in effort, but in Jesus Christ alone.

We come as one body, forgiven and sustained by grace.

Closing Prayer for Galatian 5

Lord, thank You for the freedom purchased at such great cost; teach us to walk in Your Spirit, bear Your fruit, and live in the liberty of Your grace. Amen.

God Be With You Till We Meet Again,

God be with you till we meet again,

By His counsels guide, uphold you,

With His sheep securely fold you,

God be with you till we meet again.

o Refrain:

Till we meet, till we meet,

Till we meet at Jesus’ feet;

Till we meet, till we meet,

God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

’Neath His wings securely hide you,

Daily manna still provide you,

God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

When life’s perils thick confound you,

Put His arms unfailing round you,

God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

Keep love’s banner floating o’er you,

Smite death’s threat’ning wave before you,

God be with you till we meet again.

Jeremiah E. Rankin, pub.1880

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Jesus in John 14:1-3
