The church in Sardis was impressive on the outside. It had a reputation. People knew its name. It appeared active, successful, and alive. Yet when the risen Christ examined the church, He saw something very different. "I know your works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead." (Revelation 3:1) This is one of the most sobering messages in all the letters to the seven churches. Sardis receives almost no commendation. The problem complacency.
