Paul teaches that spiritual gifts must be governed by love and exercised in an orderly way that builds up the church. After addressing worship practices, unity, and spiritual gifts in chapters 11–12, Paul turns to the heart of the matter. 1 Corinthians 13 is often read at weddings, but in context it is a corrective to a divided church. The Corinthians prized dramatic gifts, public recognition, and spiritual status. Paul shows them a “more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31)
