How Does the World End? A Biblical Account

How Does the World End? A Biblical Account

I think the end of the world will be filled with the terror of the Lord.

We see such terror in Noah's day when the Flood killed everyone on earth. Jesus says the end of the world will be like that. St. Paul* (5-67) * says He will be coming from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God,

I am so glad Jesus has saved me and taken that terror away!

********************************************************

The Bible talks about a different kind of “Big Bang” when the world ends:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. --2 Peter 3:10

Now Peter (1BC-67AD) wrote this in 65 AD, and the “Big Bang” theory was not developed until 1949. Where did Peter get this information? He heard it from Jesus* (4BC-30AD) Himself: For we have not followed cunningly devised fables when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 2 Peter 1:16

An asterisk* following a name means that the person is in SPIRITUAL LIVES.

What does the Bible mean by “the Day of the Lord”?

Sometimes we call it “the Second Coming”, Jesus’ promise that He is coming back to earth again:

I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:2-3

What will that look like?

It will be a sudden, unexpected, and universal event; No one knows the day or hour, not Jesus Himself, only the Father. But the Bible does give us some glimpses:

St. Paul* (5-67) foresees the event in terms of judgment:

The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

The Bible Says Jesus Will be in Charge on Judgment Day when the world ends

The concept of Judgment Day was well-known throughout the world from the earliest times, and the Old Testament has many references to it. It will be a time of reckoning when rewards and punishment are pronounced.

Here is a brief schedule of its elements as recorded in the Bible and ordered here by Jonathan Edwards* (1703-1758):

  • Christ Jesus will, in a most magnificent manner, descend from heaven with all the holy angels.

  • At the sound of the last trumpet, the dead shall rise, and the living shall be changed.

  • They shall all be brought to appear before Christ, the godly being placed on the right hand, the wicked on the left; MATT. XXV. 31, 32, 33

  • The next thing will be, that the books shall be opened: REV. XX. 12. “I saw the dead, great and small, stand before God; and the books were opened.”

  • The sentence will be pronounced. Christ will say to the wicked on the left hand, “Depart, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

  • Immediately after this, the sentence will be executed, as we are informed. MATT. XXV. 46. “These shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal.”

  • Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Matthew 13:43

Next? After the world ends there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth:

Once the judgment has been given and the wicked assigned to punishment, the old world will be destroyed by fire, “burned up” is the language St. Peter uses.

This is the world's end but not the final word. The Lord Jesus gave some further information of this to St. John* (5-100) , after all His other disciples had died:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. . .. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (REVELATION 21:1, 4)
This will be Christ’s kingdom, and we will have a place there: In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. --John 14:2-3

We will be given a new diet, a special stone, and a new name, and we will be established in God’s house forever.

Then we will see the New Jerusalem

This will be the seat of government and the place of the throne of God. It will be based on the new earth and ascend into heaven. We have the dimensions!

It turns out to be 1500 miles wide, long, and high! That’s about 2 million square miles (roughly midway between the sizes of AUSTRALIA and INDIA). Resting on the Earth, its ceiling would be almost 1300 miles above the INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION which orbits 240 miles above the earth.

If 4 billion people were housed in it, each would have 2800 acres or 122 million square feet; this is 40 times the area of the Dallas Cowboys stadium! (3 million sq. ft.)

What is the Bible’s message for you and me?

It is the same message Jesus gave His disciple 2000 years ago: Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. -- Luke 21:36

Do you belong to Jesus? If so, He is working for you right now, preparing that place in His kingdom. If not, you are in great danger. Your spiritual life is 100% dependent on Him. He is calling you now, at this very moment to come to Him and work with Him in the eternal kingdom described here. Let me know if I can help, or if you have any questions.

The Great Judgment Morning

I dreamed that the great judgment morning

Had dawned, and the trumpet had blown;

I dreamed that the nations had gathered

To judgment before the white throne;

From the throne came a bright, shining angel,

And he stood on the land and the sea,

And he swore with his hand raised to Heaven,

That time was no longer to be.

Refrain:

And, oh, what a weeping and wailing,

As the lost were told of their fate;

They cried for the rocks and the mountains,

They prayed, but their prayer was too late.

The rich man was there, but his money

Had melted and vanished away;

A pauper he stood in the judgment,

His debts were too heavy to pay:

The great man was there, but his greatness,

When death came, was left far behind!

The angel that opened the records,

Not a trace of his greatness could find.

The widow was there with the orphans,

God heard and remembered their cries;

No sorrow in heaven forever,

God wiped all the tears from their eyes;

The gambler was there and the drunkard,

And the man that had sold them the drink,

With the people who gave him the license,

Together in hell, they did sink.

The moral man came to the judgment,

But self-righteous rags would not do;

The men who had crucified Jesus

Had passed off as moral men, too;

The soul that had put off salvation,

“Not tonight; I’ll get saved by and by,

No time now to think of religion!”

At last, they had found time to die…

Bertram H. Shadduck, 1894

Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Rev 20:15

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. – Jesus in Matthew 13:43

JESUS said unto her, I AM THE RESURRECTION, AND THE LIFE: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And WHOSOEVER liveth and believeth in me shall never die --John 11:25-26
